A Day of Healing for Family and Friends Touched by
Suicide
A person dies by suicide every eighteen minutes in the United States, and
hundreds of thousands of family members, friends and co-workers —
"survivors" — are left behind to cope with their pain and their questions.
On Saturday, November 20, 2004, thousands of survivors of suicide from
across the nation will join together for support, healing, information and
empowerment as part of the Sixth Annual National Survivors of Suicide Day,
sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and
hosted and sponsored in part by the Florida Initiative for Suicide
Prevention (FISP).
For those residing in Broward County and vicinity, this day of healing
includes local suicide support group leaders, as well as specialists in the
field, Dr. Maya Bat-Ami and Certified Grief Specialist Mr. Bob Sands.
(For other site locations, go to
www.afsp.com.)
The event takes place at the campus at Nova Southeastern University, 3200
So. University Dr., Davie, Florida, in the Chancellor’s Dining Room, at
10:00 a.m. Brunch and snacks for the day are included in the registration
fee of $15.00. Registration can be online at
fisp@earthlink.net or by telephone
at (954) 924-0014. Scholarships are available by contacting FISP.
Linking the local event to over 50 simultaneous survivor conferences
across the U.S. through live satellite broadcast, National Survivors of
Suicide Day helps bereaved survivors express and understand the powerful and
often immobilizing emotions they experience, connecting with others who have
survived and are brave enough to bare their souls, having lost a loved one
to suicide. The nationwide program features panel discussions with Dr. John
Maltsberger, professor of clinical psychiatry at Harvard University, and Dr.
Raymond DePaulo Jr., director of psychiatry at John Hopkins University, and
chief of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital. A panel discussion of
surviving suicide loss follows. The teleconference will also be broadcast on
the AFSP website, www.afsp.org.
For more information about National Survivors of Suicide Day, to find a
conference site nearest you, or to register for the webcast, log on to
www.afsp.org or locally call the
Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention, Inc. (FISP) at (954) 924-0014 or
